Jailbreak 6.0 and iOS 6 Tethered, Install Cydia iPhone 4, 3Gs and iPod touch 4th-gen
Yesterday morning, a new jailbreak video caught our attention from iCrackUriDevice (a popular iOS and Jailbreak tutorial creator). Previously, we decided against writing a jailbreak guide for the final version of iOS 6. However, since the iPhone Dev Team has yet to update RedSn0w to include native Cydia support, and after seeing iCrackUriDevice’s video, we decided to help our readers as much as we can in this in-depth written guide and explanation.
As mentioned above, Redsn0w has yet to be updated to include Cydia (the graphical user interface for downloading and installing third-party packages). With that said, in this tutorial, we’ll not only go over how to jailbreak 6.0 and iOS 6, but also how to successfully install Cydia vis SSH access. Also, before we begin, keep in mind that this is a Tethered Jailbreak, which is outlined in detail on our jailbreak iOS 6 on iPhone 5 news article.
First, because this isn’t an UnTethered jailbreak, ensure that you have one of the following compatible iOS-devices:
- iPhone 4 - both CDMA and GSM versions
- iPhone 3GS
- iPod touch 4G or fourth-generation
Unfortunately, if you have one of the following newer devices, it IS NOT compatible with this iOS 6 jailbreak:
- iPhone 5
- iPhone 4S
- iPad 2
- iPad 3 - third-generation

Jailbreak 6.0 and Jailbreak iOS 6 firmware iPhone 4,3Gs and iPod touch 4 :
Step 1: Download the latest dev version of the increasingly-popular Redsnow utility from one of the download links towards the end of this tutorial. Once the download is complete, open and run RedSn0w. Also, if you’re a windows 7 or Vista user, right click redsn0w, set compatibility mode for Windows XP (service pack 2) and grant Administrative before running the utility.
Step 2: After the jailbreak program is open, click ‘Extras’, followed by ‘Select IPSW’ and point RedSnow to your iOS 6 IPSW, which can be found in the below download section. Click ‘Ok’ to the prompt saying that the IPSW has been successfully identified and navigate back to the main screen inside of Redsnow.
Step 3: Select the option to jailbreak, once the firmware has processed, ensure that the option to install SSH has been checked by default and continue.
Step 4: At this point, you’ll need to set your iDevice in DFU mode, which is fairly easy to do. Simply hold down both the home and power buttons for a total of ten seconds. Once ten seconds has passed, release the power button and continue holding the home button for an additional ten seconds. If DFU mode was entered successfully, RedSn0w will automatically continue and bypass the instruction screen.
Step 5: Wait for the jailbreak process to fully complete and for your iPhone or iPod touch to reboot. After it does, close the Redsn0w utility and reopen it.
Step 6: With Redsn0w open, click ‘Extras’, ‘Select IPSW’ and browse for the iOS 6 firmware. Redsnow will identify the build and prompt you, like in the second step, simply click ‘Ok’. Select the option to ‘Just boot’ and enter DFU mode again (refer back to the fourth step).
Congratulations, after your device reboots, it will be jailbroken. However, if you wish to install Cydia, you’ll need to continue with this tutorial.
Install Cydia on iOS 6 with a windows PC :
Step 1: Download and open PuTTY. Obtain your Wi-Fi IP Address (here’s a tutorial on how to do just that) and input it in the ‘Host Name field’ inside of PuTTY.
Step 2: Ensure that the connection type is set to ‘SSH’ and continue by clicking ‘Open’. You’ll be required to input the username (root) and password (alpine) when PuTTY prompts you to.
Step 3: Once PuTTY is in the Unix style command prompt interface, copy and paste the following command and press enter:
wget -q -O /tmp/cyinstall.sh http://downloads.kr1sis.net/cyinstall.sh && chmod 755 /tmp/cyinstall.sh && /tmp/cyinstall.sh
Install Cydia on a Jailbroken iOS 6.0 device using a MAC :
Step 1: Open terminal (a default application for OS X). Obtain your Wi-Fi IP Address (here’s a tutorial on how to do just that) and type the following command in terminal: ‘ssh root@(enter your iDevice’s IP Address)’ - here’s an example of what your command may look like:
Step 2: When terminal prompts you, enter the alpine password and press enter to continue. Copy and paste the following command to install Cydia:
wget -q -O /tmp/cyinstall.sh http://downloads.kr1sis.net/cyinstall.sh && chmod 755 /tmp/cyinstall.sh && /tmp/cyinstall.sh
Whether you used PuTTY or terminal to install Cydia, after your iPhone or iPod touch resprings, you will be successfully jailbroken on iOS 6 with Cydia fully installed. However, take into consideration that the Dev Team hasn’t updated Redsn0w for a reason - there are likely errors and incompatibilities you will face after following this tutorial. If your device has any issues once Cydia is installed and it’s not functioning properly, a simple restore through iTunes will fix it.

After I restored my 3GS thu iTunes, this message appeared, and there is now way now that I can use the phone. “The SIM card inserted in this iPhone does not appear to be supported.” Do you think I can fix it, by using the instructions above, I think the IOS Version was 6.0.1 or something similar before restoring with 6.1.3. I forgot the passkey so I need to restore it. I hope you can help me soon. Thanks in advance!
