How to Jailbreak iOS 6.0.1 for iPhone 4, 3GS and iPod touch - Yesterday, iH8sn0w updated Sn0wbreeze to include jailbreak support for iOS 6.0.1 and iOS 6. While only providing the ability to jailbreak pre-A5 iOS-based devices, the new version of Snowbreeze (2.9.7) brings 6.0.1 and 6.0 support for the iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS and the 4th Generation iPod touch.

By following this simple and easy-to-understand jailbreak tutorial, iOS users with A4-based devices or earlier can achieve a tethered jailbreak on iOS 6.0.1 with a popular Windows-only jailbreak utility by the name of Sn0wbreeze. Before proceeding, it’s important to realize that this is a Tethered, not an UnTethered, jailbreak. Due to the nature of the Snowbreeze jailbreak tool, users are required to boot tethered using a simple utility every time they need to reboot their iOS-device into its completely functional jailbroken state.

Supported iDevices for Snowbreeze jailbreak: As mentioned at the beginning of the tutorial, this jailbreak is only compatible with Apple’s pre-A5 processor devices, which includes the iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4 and the iPod touch 4th Generation. Unfortunately, the following iOS 6.0.1 A5, A5X, A6 and A6X devices are NOT supported:

• iPhone 4S
• iPad 2
• iPad 3
• iPod touch 5th Gen
• iPad mini tablet
• iPhone 5
• Fourth generation iPad, Apple’s new iPad 4

Furthermore, if you jailbreak one of the supported A4 or earlier iOS devices on 6.0.1 with Sn0wbreeze, it will be limited to a tethered boot -only state for the time being.

How-to jailbreak iOS 6.0.1 and iOS 6:

Step 1: Download the latest version of the Sn0wbreeze jailbreak utility for Windows (2.9.7 - available here) and download the corresponding iOS 6.0.1 IPSW for your iPhone or iPod touch.

Step 2: Connect your iOS device to a computer via a standard USB cable and run the Snowbreeze application from your PC.

Note: Users running Windows 8 are first required to download and install Microsoft’s .NET Framework v3.5 - instructions can be found on MSDN.

Step 3: Click the blue arrow in the bottom right corner of the Sn0wbreeze jailbreak tool to proceed. Click Browse for an IPSW and direct the selection window toward your device’s corresponding 6.0.1 firmware, which should have been obtained in the first step.

Step 4: Select the Simple Mode in the middle and continue in order to build your custom jailbreak firmware. Once Sn0wbreeze has successfully compiled the new custom iOS 6.0.1 firmware, the IPSW will be placed directly on your desktop.

Step 5: At this point, you’ll be required to set your iPhone or iPod touch into Pwned Device Firmware Update (DFU) mode before restoring to the newly-built 6.0.1 custom jailbreak firmware. To accomplish this, simply use sn0wbreeze’s built-in iREB functionality, found towards the top of the File Menu status bar.

• To Enter DFU mode: Press and hold both the power and home buttons together for a total of ten seconds. After ten seconds has passed, release the power button and continue to hold the home button for an additional ten seconds.

Step 6: After your iOS device enters Pwned DFU mode, exit snowbreeze and open the iTunes application. Select your connected iPhone or iPod Touch from the menu on the left, press and hold the SHIFT key on your keyboard and click the Restore button inside iTunes. Once a selection window appears, direct iTunes toward the iOS 6.0.1 custom jailbreak IPSW that was created using Sn0wbreeze.

Following the iTunes restore, your iDevice will be successfully jailbroken on iOS 6.0.1, thanks to the custom firmware - jailbreaking is really that simple.

How to boot tethered:

Step 7: As previously mentioned, you’ll be required to boot tethered every time you wish to reboot your iOS-device with complete functionality. Thankfully, Snowbreeze will automatically create a folder on your desktop entitled iBooty, which is specifically for booting tethered. Follow these two easy steps to boot your device tethered:

• Execute the iBooty utility, select the iOS 6.0.1 device you wish to boot tethered from the drop down menu in the bottom right.
• Click Start and enter DFU mode by following the instructions found in the fifth step of this tutorial.

Once in DFU mode, let iBooty do the rest - it will automatically reboot your device into its Tethered jailbreak mode.

At this point, you’ll be able to successfully install Cydia tweaks, mods and applications on your iPhone or iPod touch running iOS 6.0.1.
