Nope, Jailbreak Scams Identified! - Today, as the public eagerly awaits MSS 2015 (the Mobile Security Summit), which will be held by TaiG on March 27^th in Beijing, China, numerous rumors, speculation and pure conjecture pertaining to a new iOS 8.2 jailbreak have been cluttering the blogosphere. Numerous individuals, and sources, claim that TaiG will use the summit as a platform to launch the team’s next jailbreak utility, which will liberate those who have been locked out of jailbreaking since iOS 8.1.3’s release and, in turn, patch the last Untethered jailbreak tool. Furthermore, in the wake of the devastation iOS 8.1.3 left, at least in terms of its aforementioned patching of TaiG, numerous (successful) scams have come into fruition that attempt to trick helpless jailbreakers into believing they’re installing Cydia, and they often succeed. However, in reality, said users fall victim to the potential unsolicited collection of, and often times profit from, their personal data. While jailbreak scams are nothing new, as they tend to propagate following the patch of every significant jailbreak utility, they’ve evolved from blatantly obvious viruses that previously attempted to infect Windows-based PCs to what some would consider a very close lookalike to a mobile web-based Cydia, which again profit from the unknowing collection and selling of Big data (here’s the wiki on the concept).  So what can you do to avoid  falling victim to the jailbreak iOS 8.2 scams that now litter the web? Can I Jailbreak iOS 8.2, What About The ‘Pangu8 Semi Jailbreak’?

Unfortunately, as much as we’d like TaiG 1.3.0 to jailbreak 8.2 (the public version), it simply cannot. As we’ve mentioned a number of times, the latest iteration of TaiG, v1.3.0, is not only the most current actual jailbreak utility, it was patched by Apple’s second latest iOS release: iOS 8.1.3.

Anything else you may happen across, as of March, 2015, is certainly fake, especially one that, while we will neither dignify nor legitimize the scam by linking to it, we we’ll disavow it’s unofficial (street) name, being the Pangu8 semi jailbreak for iOS 8.2. That site not only employs the method outlined in the first paragraph, the collection of various personal data such as device serial numbers, but it couldn’t be more easily identified as a spam.

The Latest (Actual) Jailbreak 8.2 Status and MSS 2015 Rumors

The latest version of Pangu (the official pangu8 utility) only functions on up to iOS 8.1, as it was patched by Apple with the release of 8.1.1. Moreover, while the site can easily be identified as a scam by those familiar with Cydia’s classic appearance and functionality, those less proficient when it comes to the realm of jailbreaking might fall victim to the ways of the site’s malicious data collection and selling methods. Also, don’t test it out for yourself, as the profile it prompts you to install will result in the immediate passing of sensitive information to their servers - once it’s done, said data is in their possession and nothing can be done to rectify that.

Fraudulent Semi Jailbreak Fix

However, if you already fell victim to said site, or any number of other fraudulent jailbreak schemes, it’s worth checking to see if they managed to install any permanent profiles in the ‘General > Profiles’ portion of the default Settings app. If the section isn’t there, you don’t have any profiles installed, which is a good thing - if a profile from one of the scams is present in the aforementioned section, uninstall it/them immediately.

iOS 8.2 and Jailbreak Summary

To provide a brief summary, no, there isn’t a jailbreak for either iOS 8.2 or iOS 8.1.3; the latest TaiG tool simply supports iOS 8.1.2 and iOS 8.2 betas 1 and 2 (not the public version). Also, unless you see it explicitly covered on Evasi0n Jailbreak, it’s 100% fake - we’ll report on any new, and future, jailbreak utilities immediately following their release. Finally, the rumors suggesting we’ll see a new TaiG jailbreak for 8.2 following the conclusion of MSS 2015, while entirely possible, are nothing more than that: rumors (for additional information on the topic, we recommend watching the above video).
