Jailbreak iOS 6.1.2 UnTethered Using Sn0wbreeze [In-depth Tutorial]
How to Jailbreak iOS 6.1.2 UnTethered via Sn0wbreeze, in-depth Jailbreak Tutorial - Recently, iH8sn0w updated Sn0wbreeze to version 2.9.11 in order to jailbreak iOS 6.1.2 UnTethered. While the new Sn0wbreeze 2.9.11 utility is capable of jailbreaking iOS 6, 6.0.1, 6.0.2, 6.1 and even Apple’s latest iOS 6.1.2 firmware update, jailbreakers with an iPhone 4S, iPhone 5, iPad mini, iPad 4 or any of the iOS-based devices with newer processors should follow our in-depth Evasi0n Jailbreak tutorial for 6.0 through 6.1.2 on either Mac or Windows computers. Unfortunately, in addition to only supporting A4-powered devices, Sn0wbreeze only functions on Windows, thus OS X users should either use Evasion, borrow their friend’s Windows computer or create a virtual machine.
Sn0wbreeze versus Evasi0n Jailbreak Utility
So, given the limited support of Sn0wbreeze, for both operating systems and iOS devices, why would anyone choose to use the utility over evasi0n? The answer is rather simple, not only can sn0wbreeze hacktivate iPhones (bypass Apple’s required official SIM activation step following a device restore), it can also preserve iPhone 4 and iPhone 3GS basebands for use with software unlocks - assuming the baseband is low enough in the first place.
While previously mentioned, it should still be reiterated, Sn0wbreeze 2.9.11 only functions on the following three devices because a low-level DFU exploit has yet to be discovered that allows for the injection of jailbreaks on newer iDevices:
- iPhone 4 (both GSM and CDMA models)
- iPhone 3G
- iPod touch 4G or 4th generation
How to Jailbreak 6.1.2 UnTethered via Sn0wbreeze 2.9.11
Step 1: Download the latest version of Sn0wbreeze from the official iH8Sn0w page. Additionally, .NET Framework 3.5 must be downloaded and installed if your computer is running Windows 8, Microsoft’s latest operating system.
Step 2: Connect the iPhone or iPod touch you wish to jailbreak to a Windows computer via an official Apple 30-pin USB cable and ensure that said device is recognized by your computer.
Step 3: Extract the contents of the file downloaded in the first step using the same method you would for any ordinary zip file - it’s strongly advised that you place the folder on your desktop and run the Sn0wbreeze executable directly inside.
Step 4: Click the Download iOS Firmwares button on the right-hand side of the screen, select your supported iPhone or iPod touch from the IPSW Downloader selector, click the latest 6.1.2 firmware from the iOS drop-down menu on the right and start the download.
Step 5: When Sn0wBreeze properly identifies the corresponding IPSW for the device you selected, click Next, followed by the option to jailbreak via Simple Mode.
Step 6: Once the utility finishes creating the custom iOS 6.1.2 firmware, which could take a while, click the OK button when prompted and prepare to follow the on-screen instructions to enter Pwned DFU Mode, which can be done using the simplified method listed below.
- Hold the home and power buttons together for a total of ten seconds.
- Once ten seconds has passed, immediately release the power button and continue holding the home button for an additional fifteen seconds.
Step 7: If you’ve entered DFU mode correctly, Sn0wbreeze will notify you that your iPhone or iPod touch is now in Pwned DFU mode. At this point, it’s safe to close Sn0wbreeze and open iTunes.
Step 8: Select your device inside iTunes, press and hold the Shift key on your keyboard and right click on Restore inside iTunes to bring up the IPSW selection window. Point iTunes to the custom firmware that was created by Sn0wbreeze, which can be found on your desktop.
Step 9: During the restore process, refrain from touching any of the physical buttons on your device and/or unplugging it and simply let iTunes do what it does best. Once the process is complete, your iPhone or iPod touch will be fully jailbroken on iOS 6.1.2 via an Untethered jailbreak and you’ll find the much-welcomed Cydia icon in a blank space on your SpringBoard.
Congratulations, if you’ve made it this far, you’ve managed to successfully jailbreak using sn0wbreeze. Although the process is nowhere near as simple and straightforward as evasi0n, which we recommend for most users due to its wide umbrella of supported devices, it certainly has its advantages. After you’ve updated and jailbroken your iPhone with snowbreeze, you can unlock using UltraSn0w, as long as you’ve managed to preserve a lower baseband.
Furthermore, although the sheer number of packages available through Cydia can seem daunting, we’ve complied a list of 25 must-have Cydia tweaks for iOS 6 through 6.1.2 that we at Evasi0n Jailbreak personally recommend.
