Downgrade 8.1.1 To 8.1 Guide - Downgrading To Jailbreak iOS 8.1

Downgrade from iOS 8.1.1 to 8.1 Tutorial, Downgrading to Jailbreak 8.1 Untethered via Pangu - Following the enormous blow to the jailbreak community that was iOS 8.1.1, a number of our readers have inquired as to whether it’s possible to jailbreak 8.1.1 Untethered. Unfortunately, as we’ve detailed throughout several articles as of late, iOS 8.1.1 closes a number of vulnerabilities previously exploited by Pangu for iOS 8 to achieve an UnTethered jailbreak on 8.0 through 8.1. Therefore, it’s no longer possible to jailbreak any device, whether it’s a newer iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, iPhone 5s, iPad mini 3, iPad Air 2 or an older iPhone 4s or iPad 2, on iOS 8.1.1 - it’s impossible to jailbreak 8.1.1 employing the use of the current Pangu utility. At this point, you may be wondering if it’s possible to downgrade from 8.1.1 to 8.1 (the latest firmware supported by Pangu). Thankfully, the answer is an astounding “yes”! In spite of Apple’s recent efforts to close the untethered iOS 8 jailbreak, the company has yet to stop signing iOS 8.1. For those of you who wish to downgrade from iOS 8.1.1 to 8.1 in order to perform a jailbreak, continue reading past the break, and do so with haste, as this incredible opportunity won’t last!

First, prior to outlining the relatively simple steps, it’s important to understand how iOS restores are delivered and verified, at least at a rudimentary level.

Essentially, before even initiating the restore process, iTunes takes the identity of the device (its type, model, etc.), as well as the IPSW (firmware file) and checks against Apple’s servers to cross-reference the device intended for restore with the latest firmware the company is currently signing, or allowing for the specified device.

If an individual attempts to restore to an older firmware that’s no longer being signed for the specified device (utilizing the method we’ll outline in today’s article), before even entering the restore procedure, iTunes will return an error message, effectively making downgrades impossible. Moreover, while it was an option to utilize TinyUmbrella to essentially trick iTunes into utilizing a non-Apple server to verify that a firmware is being signed with device-specific SSH blobs, due to Apple’s strict security improvements that’s no longer an option - it’s either restore via iTunes utilizing Apple’s servers or nothing at all.

Furthermore, while Apple is currently signing 8.1.1, in addition to 8.1, that could change at virtually any second (we’ll update this article when it does). In light of the aforementioned fact, it’s paramount that any and all iDevice owners running 8.1.1 downgrade as quickly as possible to ensure that they won’t be stuck on the firmware without a jailbreak in sight for what’s bound to be a painful wait (for more on jailbreaking, read through our recent coverage on new developments or watch the below video).

How To Downgrade 8.1.1 To 8.1 And Jailbreak: All iDevices

Step 1. In addition to downloading 8.1 prior to downgrading to the firmware, you’ll need to ensure that iTunes is up-to-date - downloads for the iOS 8.1 IPSW and iTunes are available from our download section, listed below.

Step 2. Plug your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch running iOS 8.1.1 that’s intended for downgrade to 8.1 into your computer via a standard USB cable and launch iTunes.

Step 3. Once iTunes recognizes your device (if it doesn’t, ensure that you’ve updated iTunes), enter Recovery mode by holding down the home and power buttons together until an iTunes logo appears on your device’s screen and iTunes displays a restore prompt, close out of any of said prompts.

Step 4. Hold either Option if you’re on Mac OS X or Shift if you’re on a Windows-based PC  and left click the restore button inside of iTunes; refer to the above video if this portion of the 8.1 downgrade process is confusing.

Step 5. Wait for the restore to complete, follow our in-depth iOS 8.1 jailbreak guide and then restore from your latest backup that was created on iOS 8.1 or earlier.

Note: Due to Apple’s strict measure, you cannot restore from a backup that was created on a higher firmware, meaning you won’t be able to restore any of your data from 8.1.1, use a backup from iOS 8.1 or earlier - again, if this portion is confusing in any way, we advise referring to the above video for additional clarification.

Congratulations, after following only five simple and easy-to-understand steps, you’ve successfully downgraded from 8.1.1 to 8.1 on your iPhone, iPod touch or iPad - you can now jailbreak iOS 8.1 successfully!
